Graduated Legal Management in Ateneo de Manila. MBA from University of Michigan-Dearborn. Formerly officer of Far East Bank and Trust Company, and of Bank of the Philippine Islands.
In late 1994, walked into Manila Chronicle, submitted article on Forrest Gump. Been film critic ever since.
Moved to Manila Times before Chronicle was closed by strike, 1997; moved to Businessworld before Manila Times was sold, 1998. Denied responsibility for both closures.
Contributor to Cinemaya Magazine; Cambridge Book Review; Hongkong Film Festival catalogue; Singapore Film Festival catalogue; Far East Film Festival
catalogue; and, on occasion, Cahiers du Cinema. Helped develop and write screenplay of Tikoy Aguiluz’s Rizal sa Dapitan (Rizal in Dapitan, 1997).
Was consultant and programmer to Cinemanila, Far East and Rotterdam Film Festivals. Acted as juror to Jeonju and Vancouver Film Festivals.
